According to the PoeDB, the current player retention of the recent Necropolis 3.24 League has seen a large drop.

Most Played Season has Least Retention

The following chart shows the %-amount of players that are currently playing in comparison to the launch of Path of Exile 3.24: Necropolis.

We desperately want to iterate that this chart shows the comparison of players from League Start to current day. This chart does not reflect the player numbers overall.

Many players have also expressed their feelings about this topic on Reddit, as they were stating:

It feels like two leagues patched together.
Allflames are cool, but it needed something more to be good.
Corpse crafting is a good idea on paper, but the implementation was just awful.
Not to mention the same mistakes that already happened 20 times in PoE history, inventory too small, non stackable stuff, terrible UI, over complicated mechanics

It is important to note that Necropolis has been the second most successful League Launch in the history of Path of Exile. Only the Crucible League has seen more players, which were heavily affected by the imminent launch of Diablo 4.

Overall, it does not look great for the current state of this Season in comparison to other previously very successful Leagues. This does not mean that the game is in a bad state currently. Grinding Gear Games continues to improve on Path of Exile, and really shows how to maintain and even grow a game which is over 10 years old!
