Dragonflight: Plunderstorm – Guide & Overview, Rewards & How To Play

Plunderstorm is a new limited-time event in World of Warcraft. We have summarized all the information about how to play, items & abilities and all the rewards of this new feature.

Dragonflight: Plunderstorm has been officially revealed just before the server maintenance on NA Servers. The new feature is a 60-man Battle Royal which does only require active gametime on your World of Warcraft accounts, no matter if Classic or Retail.

Courtesy to our friends over on Wowhead for datamining a lot of these Rewards & Strategies!

How To Play Plunderstorm

No expansion purchase is required, but a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time is needed to participate in a high-stakes, play-by-the-seat-your-pants match. This means that Classic players can also participate in a plethora of plundering fun by simply installing the modern (Live) World of Warcraft client:

  1. Launch the Battle.net desktop app.
  2. Click the World of Warcraft icon at the top. If the icon is missing, click on All Games and select the game from the list.
  3. On top of the Install button is a drop-down menu. Confirm that you wish to install World of Warcraft.
  4. Click Install.

Once you’re in modern WoW:

  1. Select Plunderstorm2 from the World of Warcraft game menu to get into the action.
  2. Create a new, ready-to-play character—player characters are unique to this event. You don’t need previous knowledge of races and classes to chart your course for mayhem.
  3. Choose between Solo or—to play with your Battle.net friends—make a group from the Plunderstorm character screen and select Duo. If queued for a Duo without a partner, you’ll be automatically matched with one. You can also access chat, customize characters, and see the queue from the Character Select Screen.

750 Additional Trader's Tender for Plunderstorm

The community has discovered and our datamining has confirmed that the Renown Track has Trader’s Tender rewards at Renown 24 and 33 on the Keg Leg’s Crew! This means that just by playing Plunderstorm, you can get 750 Trader’s Tender for the Trading Post.

Remember that Plunderstorm is a limited-time event, suspected to be around for 6 weeks. If you want these  Trader’s Tender, make sure to get it done before the event goes away.

All Abilities in Dragonflight: Plunderstorm

With Plunderstorm now live, there is a veritable treasure trove of new abilities to try! Split into 10 offensive and 10 utility spells with four ranks, players can equip two of each to mix and match a new build with each playthrough!

Collecting lower level versions of the same spell will increase its rank, though lucky players may also find higher quality versions outright. Learn more about the 60-player PvEvP battle royale Plunderstorm event in our dedicated content overview guide!

Slash and  Health Brew are baseline spells that all players will have access to at all times in Plunderstorm. Other spells may be hot swapped as they are found throughout the event, though players may only have two offensive and two utility skills equipped at a time!

All Items in Dragonflight: Plunderstorm

Unlike upgradeable offensive and utility skills that can be used repeatedly, items are consumed on use and only one may be held at a time.

Pickups

These effects do not have items associated with them, suggesting they are ground-based pickups which are instantly consumed instead of retained on the action bar. The existence of  Misplaced Coin Pouch and  Prismatic Punch Card suggests that at least some of these items will be purchased from Ven-O-Matic machines, allowing players access to items rather than use only those they happen to find. Vending machines are also a common Fortnite mechanic, from which much of Plunderstorm appears to draw a great amount of inspiration.

Unknown

The mechanics of these effects are still unknown, but also appear related to the Plunderstorm event. They could be leftover spells, or special world interactions, but do not appear related to any equippable items.

Plunderstorm Guide - Farming Renown & How To Win

Alongside several achievements, players can earn new mounts, pets and cosmetics by earning Renown.

Most rewards are tied to your current Renown Level and unlock upon reaching.

Best Offensive Skills for Plunderstorm

There is an offensive skill that is dominating right now,  Fire Whirl.

 Fire Whirl

The Best Offensive skill is very much  Fire Whirl and it’s not even close.

This ability does a lot of AoE damage and increases your movement speed. In addition, you have full control of your character and don’t have to aim a skill shot that might miss your target if they dodge. If you catch someone in a  Fire Whirl and just move your mouse around so you can remain on them, it does so much damage. It’s also good to farm mobs for experience!

The downside of this skill in a vacuum is that you have to get on get on top of enemies, but this can be made up for in so many ways including utility skills.

 Rime Arrow

A great secondary offensive ability is  Rime Arrow.

This ability cannot miss. That’s it. It has a decent range and can poke players down from range and unless they gap close or have  Rime Arrow as well, you’ll slowly bring their health down before going in for a kill. it also interrupts healing after your enemy tries to disengage.

The ability doesn’t do a lot of damage but given the lack of other solid options and Fire Whirl being so dominant, this is a great second option at the moment.

 Storm Archon

If you want another decent ability and don’t want to play the poke game,  Storm Archon can deal a lot of damage, but you do have to hit your shots.

 Holy Shield

Another good ranged option, those with a little more upkeep since you’ll want to press the ability again to explode the shield when its near your enemies.

Best Utility Skills for Plunderstorm

With the dominance of  Fire Whirl, the best utility skills for Plunderstorm are anything that helps your Fire Whirl or counters enemies’ Fire Whirls. Crowd Control abilities are very good so you can spin on top of them and destroy their health pool.

 Steel Traps

One of the easiest CC abilities to hit, especially if you’re already in melee with them. It adds a lot of area denial or will just trap them right away, preventing them from moving for a couple of seconds allowing you to hit your abilities without the fear of misses.

 Repel

This ability makes you immune to all CCs while casting it, then silences anyone close to you and knocks them back. Because of the overabundance of Fire Whirl, it’ll shut down anyone that tries approaching you as long as you’re not stunned before hand.

 Windstorm

A ranged skill shot that stuns any targets hit. It can function both as a defensive and offensive option. If someone is Fire Whirling on you, use it defensively to stop them in their track. Otherwise, hit someone with at ranged and you can go in for the kill.

 Fade to Shadow

This is a great movement ability as it’s a blink followed by a Stealth option that can make you unpredictable. Defensively, you can blink away from enemies when you’re in trouble, then try to disengage. Offensively, you can use the ability to get in quick and drop  Steel Traps or  Fire Whirl on their face.

 Quaking Leap

Another great movement ability, slightly leaning towards being more offensive since if you hit the skill, it stuns them right away and sets them up to be  Fire Whirl. You’ll have to try to get used to how it works in order to crash down early on top of them, but it also functions as a decent option to run from a fight!

Best Skill Combos for Plunderstorm

Here are some of the best combos for Plunderstorm.

Best Offensive Skill Combos for Plunderstorm

Here are some of the best offensive skill combos for Plunderstorm.

Best Utility Skill Combos for Plunderstorm

Here are some of the best utility skill combos for Plunderstorm. However, this is more up for how you want to play the game. Having some Crowd Control and a movement/defensive options should be work great.

How to Gain Plunderstorm Renown

There are two ways of gaining the Plunderstorm Renown, Keg Leg’s Crew: through Quests and by collecting Plunder in game. There are two types of quests in Plunderstorm: Daily Quests and Captain’s Orders.

Plunder is turned into reputation at a 1:1 rate.

If you’re after reputation, the only thing you care about is Plunder. Get that Gold!

Captain’s Orders – Match Quests

Every game, the second you hit the ground for the first time, you will receive one of six quests:

Completing this quest will give you 250 Plunder.

Daily Quests

Once per day at the normal reset hour for your region, you will get a quest to complete any Match daily.

Completing this once a day will give you 800 Plunder.

Collecting Plunder in Game

The final way to get Plunder is by finding it in game. Plunder looks like gold piles on the ground and generally drops in piles of 6-7 on the ground and from normal mobs, with special Golden Plunder chests giving ~20 and special piles near elites given ~20. Kills only seem to drop ~20 as well, leaving the best way to farm Plunder being killing as many PvE mobs as you can and avoiding fights against other players.

Farming Renown Tips and Tricks

If you’re looking to Farm Renown, here are some tips and tricks for farming Renown quickly!

Play Duos with a Friend

Playing with a friend means that you get the Plunder that they pick up as well. It’s unclear if it’s all of their Plunder or just a portion, but it’s double the farming power for the game amount of game.

Avoid PvP Fights

PvP fights are a waste of time in this mode. Getting a kill is difficult and awards almost no bonus Plunder, especially compared to what you could’ve gotten during that time. Engaging in PvP fights also slows down your experience gain, making you kill things slower in the future, also reducing your Plunder gains.

Get Farming Skills

The faster you kill things, the more Plunder you can get!  Fire Whirl is a standout, but also large AoE abilities like  Storm Archon Mana Sphere and even  Star Bomb are great abilities, even if they’re not good for PvP.

Complete the Captain’s Orders

The Match Quests are usually very easy and quick to complete and award a large chunk of Plunder for the time it takes to complete.

Complete the Daily Quest

Try to log in every day to get a bonus 800 Plunder for completing your first Match Quest.

Don’t Worry About Winning

All that matters for Renown farming is the Plunder you pick up. Completing the Match Quest is the best bang for your buck in terms of time commitment with PvE’ing mobs a second. You can win with almost no Plunder, and that will take 15+ minutes for almost no reputation.
